CHECKLIST (my desk's a mess, so is my hard disk--let's keep these on the web!)

Arrange for recording sessions (later figure out how we turn that into documentation that can be distributed to all)

For the packet--make sure that everyone receives info on how to process reimbursements.

When folks arrive at the hotel, information should be there--e.g., about Wednesday's dinner, etc. Maps to the U Arts conference site. Etc.!

Remind all section leaders to review the descriptions and initiatives submitted by each school. it could be worth mentioning these, in some context, with reference to a given school if that school is not representing on the panel.

Make sure that Chris Meyers is coming up with an invite and description!

Annotated Schedule as of March 9, 2007

NOTE: POSTING OF 3/21 (above) SUPERSEDES THIS ONE!

TITLE:

Finding Our Muse: Innovation and Creativity for "the Arts of the 21st Century"

inspired by UArts' Mission Statement: ‘The University of the Arts is committed to inspiring, educating and preparing innovative artists and creative leaders for the Arts of the 21st century.’

[David writes: "I don't have time to write a paragraph right now about how CLEA has become a tenth (collaborative and reflective!) muse, picking up the responsibilities of the 9 classical muses for educating, supporting, and inspiring artists. But I will happily do so if you folks are intrigued by the concept."]

Panel leaders should keep in touch with David--providing some sense of what will be addressed (e.g., overall concept, along with bullet points, etc.)

David would like from us (Jon, Peter, Ron) the kinds of questions that people might want to ask and pursue in each of our panel-driven sessions. This will help David with his own conceptualization and plan for framing the conversation.

TASK FOR US: Are all schools represented on a panel??

NOTE: I've now put ending times on the major panel sessions.

Notes to help us assemble panels

THIS FROM RICK MILLER, NCSA (sent 2/26)
Ron,
One of our new faculty members, Bob King, teaches what is (this
year) an experimental course called "Digital Media for the Artist"; the
experiment has gone well, and we intend to establish the course as
required for all freshmen (is it still okay to use that term?) next
year. Bob has a (actually enjoyable and useful) Power point
presentation that talks of how the course has evolved and gives samples
of student work. He's an engaging speaker and I think the CLEA gang
would find what he is doing of interest from a number of angles. He
could certainly send you a preview prior to our meeting to let the
planners of the conference see what they think and where his
presentation might fit in to the conference. (If you can't find an
official place for him, I'm sure he'd be willing to set up in a nice
cozy bar someplace; that would be my choice of venue.) Anyway, this is
what we're planning to bring to the party.
Cheers,
Rick

Refining the Agenda

Gonzalo provides some worthy suggestions. Let's take these on!

1. Both provisional titles seem a little flat to me--or, rather, vague and unhelpful. Last conference's title, "Through the Looking Glass," if vague, was thought-provoking and catchy. Maybe David can chime in--since he will probably want to find a memorable tie-in for his emcee'ing?

2. I like very much the balance among plenary, panel and break-out sessions. I wonder, all the same, whether the umbrella rubric for the first day--"The Freshman Experience"--leads too far from writing issues per se and anticipates/duplicates too much the next day's theme, "Interdisciplinarity"? Is there a way to combine these two into a day's plenary with panels (my sense of our experience at Columbia College would seem to unite these and make writing secondary...)? At any rate, we might need to either give a separate session or a different sub-title to writing;

3. I know we want to have fun on Saturday (and we deserve it and will have merited it!), but some may/will wonder whether Sunday morning's business can't be fitted into Saturday's very-similar and abbreviated schedule and will thus be less likely to stay through Saturday night and Sunday morning...

The Stuff of which CLEA is made

As we pull together our schedule for April, which is really taking shape now, we need to consider how we can integrate kinaestethic and other 'non-talking head' experiences into the discussion. CLEA is at its best when we saunter around in Brownian Motion while howling at the moon. Let's set a ouija board out for our plenary session and see where it goes!
